◆ 프로필 사진을 교체했다. (눈이 아파서 후에 다시 바꾸긴 했지만) 뭔가 고풍스러우면서 섬뜩한 느낌마저 드는 룬 문자다.  저 위의 룬 문장은 고대 영어로 적혀있으니, 언어에 관심있는 분은 힘써서 해석해보세염. 해석해보고 뜻이 마음에 들면 퍼가도 된다. 부적처럼 쓰시길. 고대 언어에 문외한이더라도, 저 빨갛게 하이라이트된 것만 이걸 참고해서 로마자로 바꿔 읽어보면 대충 무슨 뜻인지 눈치챌 듯. 여담으로, 룬 문자는 (당연히 믿거나 말거나지만) 주술성 역시 띤다고 하니까, 농담으로라도 내가 쓴 저 글이 그대로 실현되었으면 좋겠다.

I replaced my profile pic with this above. (Later I changed it again because on the profile it tired my eyes, but still I love this long-scripted image) As you see, it's runes which look quite antique, or perhaps spooky depending on your appetite. The entire sentences are written in Old English, so it's not bad to try a translation if you're a language nut.  To digress for a sec, runes are believed, though only by occultists, to be containing magical powers(believe it or not), so it may be fun if this charm really works out, even by a fluke. It doesn't matter you don't know anything about old languages; just consult this chart and transliterate the letters highlighted in red, and with a little guesswork you'll find out it's all about my vexation towards him!


◆ the brilliant green 이 발표한 겨울앨범(winter album)에 수록된 6번째 트랙인, 영어노래 that boy waits for me 를 네이버 블로그를 돌아다니다가 우연히 봤다. 기타리프가 들어가 펑키한 느낌이 나기도 하지만, 전반적으로 아침햇살처럼 나른하게 기분을 풀어주는 멜로디다. 정작 옥의 티는 보컬에 있었지만... 영어노래는 분명 영어노랜데, 이걸 세계 팬들에게 전해주려고 녹음했다면 심각한 판단미스라고 할 수밖에 없을 정도로 발음이 안습이다. 난 처음에 이 노래 듣고 영어가 아니라 일본언 줄 알았으니까... 먼 데서 예를 들 것도 없이, 당장에 도입부 가사 Couldn't sleep 가 "쿠루시쿠"로 들린다. 멜팅 홀리데이즈의 Cherry Wine보다 병아리 깃털 한 올만큼 더 나은 정도다. 단순히 영어로 나온 영미 팝송들이 멋져보여서 자신들 역시 트렌드를 따라 만들어본 건 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다.  

I listened to a J-pop in English, "That Boy Waits for Me" by the Brilliant Green. It was the sixth track in their winter album that came out in 2004. The melody sounds a little funky with guitar riffs, yet overall relaxing like morning sunshine. The only fly in the ointment is its vocal's language, though―It's recorded in English, but once you push the play button, you're going to wonder if it's really English. Even I first thought they were speaking an awkward variant of Japanese. For instance, the first entering phrase "couldn't sleep" sounded rather like "kurusiku(meaning bitterly)." It may be better a speck compared with Melting Holidays' "Cherry Wine," but that is all. It's a difference by the weight of a chick's feather. If they intended with this song to communicate better with overseas listeners, I dare say they're awfully mistaken. I want to believe they're just keeping up with Asian pop industry's odd penchant for English, like others do.  


◆ 무명 영화배우 김석균이 자택에서 목을 매 숨진 채로 발견되었다. 무명생활에 지쳐 결국 돌이킬 수 없는 선택을 했다고 한다. 엄밀히 말해 이 사건 역시 현대 사회가 불러온 거라고 봐야 할 것 같다. 우리는 그에게 명복을 빌어 줄 수는 있지만, 그가 사회적으로, 또 자본주의적으로 무능했다는 사실은 변하지 않는다. 비정하게 들리지만, 그게 현실 아닌가나.

Korean movie actor Kim Seokgyun was found dead at his house. It turned out he hanged himself after suffering from his continued life as an unknown. There we see another victim of modern society. I bet today's world, where money talks more loudly than yesterday, will regard this case as his own fault. He couldn't afford nor qualify his society's trials and failed to get higher payment. We can at least pray for his soul, yet his ineptitude wouldn't be tolerated. It surely sounds cruel, but that is capitalism, isn't it.


◆ Kim Myeonggi's book on English pronuncation helped me out a lot. To confess, I used to have an unpleasant memory with him after I got his gruff reply about my questions concerning his Image Making English method, and it feels sort of funny to see my English developed through his works. Nothing is settled.
